Story: Heart-shaped Pattern Puppy
born in Japan

A puppy has been born in Japan with a  large, clear, love-heart-shaped  pattern in his coat. The Chihuahua was born as one of a litter to a breeder. Shop owner Emiko Sakurada said it was the first time a puppy with the marks had been born out of a thousand she had bred, affectionately named ‘Heart-kun’. The long-coated male Chihuahua puppy was born in Odate, northern Japan.

Chinese Proverb: Peace in the World

If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.

Valentine’s Messages

Give with your whole heart, even if your judgment is we are not getting enough in return. Our struggle is to not take everything personally (that’s ego). When we do our part, the energy comes back to us – always. If not from the receiver, than from someone else. Positive seeds produce positive fruits. This is an immutable law. And remember, sharing is not only a physical thing. Making room in your heart for others and acknowledging that you are not the only person in the world who wants to be fulfilled, can be the best gift to give to your loved ones – and to yourself.

"Heart of a Mother" Book Contributor Jodi Seidler,
The Mother of Re-Invention Featured

The experience of divorce ran pretty deep for me because I’m from the Midwest and was raised with the notion that marriage was supposed to be forever.  In the old days, people would stay together for the kids, and these days they don’t. When I got divorced, I had so many fears, and it was such an emotional roller coaster.  I was afraid I would never find love again, that I wouldn’t make it on my own, or that I wasn’t strong enough to raise a boy by myself.

“I got divorced about 12 years ago and at the time, I felt really isolated.”

I felt like my married friends didn’t really want me around for many reasons, and I didn’t feel comfortable around couples because my lifestyle had changed. Because my son was only five at the time, I had to make sure that he felt safe and that he knew he didn’t cause the divorce and couldn’t fix it, so I reached out a therapist.  It was also very important for me to be financially secure for him because I was no longer part of a two-income household. I was really confused, and I needed support. I needed advice on how I would juggle my life, a home life, homework, work and finances as a newly single person. The first place I went was the internet, but I could hardly find anything.

“I came up with a great idea in the shower, where I get all my great ideas.”

I came up with the idea for an internet source for single parents. I got out of the shower and bought the domain name MakingLemonade.com, which has always been a phrase that kind of dictates how I live my life. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade and share it with people.

Ten or more years ago, the Internet was just developing. I noticed some resources on mothering and working moms, but not as many on single parenting. I went to those mom web sites to start collecting information. I e-mailed experts constantly to seek out resources and got really deep into research on single parenting, making notes every step of the way. That’s how I started building my website, my cyber child, Making Lemonade. Eventually, I became known as an expert, which was pretty funny for me since I started out not knowing anything and just contacting everyone trying to find information that would help me be a successful single parent.

“Creating a network of support around you is really important. It’s the best thing I did.”

I approached the principal at my son’s school and told him I wanted to start a single parent’s group because at PTA meetings, nothing was addressed to single-parent-families. Whether you create your own support group in your community, in your church or in your school, it is really important to find other single parents that you can talk to or create childcare co-ops with because it can be very isolating sometimes. People can feel very alone and lost in this world of single parenting.

“Being a single mom has taught me patience, among so many other things.”

It showed me that I am a warrior, but a gentle warrior, and that I can pretty much do anything because I did this.  If I can juggle everything I’m doing and show my son strength and compassion along the way, and make him feel like he was raised well, that’s amazing. No one else helped me or the many other single parents out there, and that’s pretty powerful.

Sparkle-Tude: Keeping a Goal-Focused Sparkling Attitude
by Sheryl Roush

17 STEPS TO FOCUSED GOAL-SETTING
  1.  Keep your self-talk positive, proactive and affirming.
  2.  Make sure the goal you are working for is something you really want,
not just something that sounds good.
  3.  Write your goal in first-person “I am” or “I have” as already
      having achieved it.
  4.  Add feelings to your goal statement. (“I am excited about…”)
  5.  Ensure your goals are not in contradiction to any of your other goals.
  6.  Write your goal out in specific detail
(numbers, target date, locations, size, pounds dropped, dollar amount).
  7.  Make your goal high enough, and know that you are deserving of it.
  8.  Treasure Map your goal with inspiring visual images in front of you.
  9.  Read your goal OUT LOUD each morning when you wake up,
visualizing/feeling the completed goal (including smells, sights,
      sounds, feelings, tastes).
10.  Read your goal OUT LOUD each evening right before you go to bed,
visualizing/feeling the completed goal (including smells, sights, sounds,
      feelings, tastes).
11.  Create a target (realistic) timeline for the goal, with a step-by-step plan.
12.  Set incremental benchmarks and highlight them on your calendar.
13.  Surround yourself with supportive, positive goal-setting people.
14.  Re-View, Re-Evaluate and Re-Write Regularly (every 3-6 months).
15.  Look for unexpected opportunities, unusual happenings that could
relate to your goals, as these may be incredible and perfect opportunities
      in disguise.
16.  Reward yourself for taking incremental steps toward achieving
      your goal.
17.  Plan a celebration date of completion, announcing the party date
      to your friends.

GOAL-FOCUS
Every time you make a decision during the day, ask yourself:
• "Does this take me closer to–or further from–my goal?"
• “Is this a distraction from–or attraction to–my goal?”
• “What is the NEXT most important thing to do?”
• “Is this my highest priority right now?”

My Goal: “I am/have_______________________________________________________________."

39 Tips for an Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

1.) Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

12.) Clear your clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

13.) Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment.

14.) Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like Algebra class …….but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

15.) Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

16.) Smile and laugh more.

22.) Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

23.) Go on and burn those ‘special’ scented candles, use the 600 thread count sheets, the good China and wear your fancy lingerie now. Stop waiting for a special occasion.  Everyday is special.

24.) No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

25.) Frame every so-called disaster with these words:  ‘In five years, will this matter?’

26.) Forgive everyone for everything.

27.) What other people think of you is none of your business.

28.) Time heals almost everything. Give time, time!

29.) However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

30.) Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will.  Stay in touch with  them.

31.) Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

32.) Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. God provides, remember?!

33.) The best is yet to come. (in Heaven)

34.)  No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

35.) Do the right thing!

36.) Call your family often.

37.) Each night  before you go to bed complete the following statements: ‘I am thankful for  __________.’
Today I accomplished _________.

38.) Remember that  you are too blessed to be stressed.

39.) Enjoy the ride. Remember  that this is not Disney World and you certainly don’t want a fast pass.  You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the  ride.

International Coaching Week Feb. 3-9

International Coaching Week Feb. 3-9

International Coaching Week will be celebrated Feb 3-9, 2008. The week is acknowledged in Chase’s Calendar of Events, and it’s the perfect time to educate the public about the value of working with a coach. Coaches around the world schedule community events, pro bono coaching, and workshops to promote coaching during this time.

Sheryl Roush is a Past President of SDPCA, the San Diego Professional Coaches Alliance, the San Diego Chapter of ICF, international Coach Federation, and comments that during this highllighted week, professional coaches offer complimentary coaching sessions for the public to experience quality coaching and empower their life and dreams to become reality.

This year marks the 10th annual International Coaching Week, originally was started in 1999 by Coach Jerri Udelson, an Master Certified Coach from Santa Fe, NM who specializes in helping entrepreneurs and professionals create successful businesses and live fulfilling lives.

Its purpose is to provide a week each year to educate the public about the value of working with a personal, business or executive coach and to provide an opportunity for coaches and their clients to acknowledge the results and progress made through the coaching process. Coaches offer a variety of activities and pro bono services in their communities during the week, including free coaching sessions, lectures and workshops.

Brief History.. from Jerri

In 1999 I created International Coaching Week as a way to promote the profession of coaching. My intention was to designate a week each year in which coaches could both celebrate and publicize coaching by offering community events, tele-events and pro bono coaching.  Originally the week was named National Personal and Business Coaching Week and it was listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events (a major PR tool), and held the first week of February, 1999.

In year 2000 Canadian coaches wanted to participate, so I changed the name to International Personal and Business Coaching Week; in 2000 the International Coach Federation (ICF) helped publicize it by featuring it in their newsletter and sending special Coaching Week broadcasts to members and chapters.

In 2001 the ICF prepared a sample press release for coaches to customize and use to publicize the week and also gave ICF members a list of suggested events (e.g. pro bono coaching, free tele-classes, etc.) to inspire them to participate in their own way.  Also that year Thomas Leonard picked up the idea and ran with it. He created a Coaching Week page on his Coachville website, designed a logo, and offered to put coaches’ press releases on the page as well as a summary of Coaching Week events.

In 2002 Thomas created a CoachingWeek.com website, and invited coaches to post their events and press releases on it. I continued to network with the ICF, Coachville and with a number of coaches with large newsletters to promote the Week.

Coaching Week really began to take off in 2002: That year it was celebrated throughout the US, Canada and in Hong Kong, with coaches offering a variety of pro bono services in their communities, including free coaching sessions, lectures and workshops. (In Richmond, VA, the mayor issued an official proclamation; in Boulder, CO, two coaches offered a free workshop for high school seniors and college freshmen on “Majoring in the Rest of your Life;” New Jersey coaches offered 13 different events during the week.)

From 2003 onward the ICF began to officially sponsor the Week, assembling a Coaching Week Task Force, announcing the Week to chapters and generating additional publicity.

In 2007 the ICF released the results from the PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Coaching Survey during Coaching Week.  Last year I created a website and blog, CoachingWeek.org, on which coaches and ICF Chapters could post their Coaching Week-related activities.

I am really pleased that so many coaches are participating in International Coaching Week. It is very gratifying to know that so many people are offering pro bono coaching and other community events in such a heartfelt way. When I started National Coaching Week in 1999 I had no idea that it would soon take on a life of its own. I really am delighted that this Week is becoming a focal point for both publicizing coaching worldwide and providing the public with a sense of the possibilities that coaching offers.

Attitude Follows Perspective
Shifting The Mood

We all have days when we are faced with chores, errands, or responsibilities that we don’t want to do. At times like these, it’s easy to get into a bad mood and stay in one as we tackle these tasks. However, given the fact that our bad mood will not change the fact that we have to do these things, and will most likely make things worse, we could also try to shift our attitude. Many wise people have pointed out that it is not so much what we do as it is how we do it that makes the difference in our lives.

It’s important when we’re facing something that’s really hard for us, whether it’s doing taxes, paying bills, or visiting a challenging relative, that we lovingly support ourselves through the process. The more supported we feel, the easier it is to open our minds to the idea that we could change our way of looking at the situation. In truth, most of the chores we don’t like doing are intimately intertwined with our blessings. When we remember this, we feel gratitude, which makes it hard to stay in a dark mood.

We can shift our attitude by considering how much we love our home as we clean it and how lucky we are to have a roof over our head. Any task can be transformed from a burden to a necessary aspect of caring for something we love. All we have to do is shift our perspective, and our attitude follows shortly behind.

Musical Selections Audio CD to accompany Heart of a Mother Book

Heart of a Mother
Music Audio CD to accompany published Book

Sparkle Press, Sparkle Presentations, Inc., and WorldSound Productions, Inc. have joined hearts and efforts to create a new MUSIC AUDIO CD to accompany the book, Heart of a Mother, by Sheryl Roush, to be released before Mother’s Day this year. Truly a unique and diverse collection, talented big name musicians have contributed their gifts in the memory and tribute to the life of "Laurie Z." beloved child pianist prodigy at age 16, a non-smoker who died February 6, 2006 from lung cancer, in the prime of her career. Each artist has donated, and some created for this compliation, their tracks in the name and love of Laurie Zeluck Carter.

“Life, for most people, consists of living on the lines – that is, doing what they feel they are supposed to do, or what is expected of them, instead of allowing themselves to soar to their own personal heights and challenges. Truly, life often hands us the best opportunities for growth when we least expect it, when something unanticipated interrupts our life ‘to do’ list. I believe that the greatest things life has to offer lie ‘between the lines,’ when we take advantage of serendipitous events and begin to paint our own picture of what truly can be for us, not what ‘should be’ for us.”
~Laurie Z.~

HEART OF A MOTHER MUSIC TALENTS:

Laurie Z.® received a total of 15 Grammy nomination considerations for her recordings. Her ability to gracefully mix classical, modern jazz and contemporary instrumental styles has been called “absolutely amazing” by prominent music critics and fans alike. Laurie was known for her in-concert improvisations and For the Love of a Child was first created in concert from a suggestion from the audience. It was later recorded live to Disklavier, without edits or overdubs. All The Love In The World by Laurie Z.®, is Sheryl Roush’s heartfelt pick.

Doug Sparling has written music for Pat Sajak’s Lucky Letters (Wheel of Fortune) cell phone game, recorded and written music for Kansas City Irish Rock band The Elders, and performed on the title theme for an indie film titled Hunter. His music has been placed in music production libraries in the U.S. and UK. Interested in many styles, Doug’s musical compositions include Celtic/Irish, solo piano, solo acoustic guitar, and ambient guitar and lap steel. Doug’s tune, The Old Stone Bridge was selected in 2005 for a McDonald’s web site benefiting the Ronald McDonald House and appears on Celtic Shores II (Epilogue Records) compilation CD. You will dance along to The Mother & Child Reel on this compilation.

Ericson Holt has recorded and toured with Grammy winners, The Mavericks, and Oscar nominee and critics favorite Allison Moorer. He has performed with Lee Roy Parnell, Rodney Crowell, Tracy Nelson, and Ricky Van Shelton. Ericson is featured prominently on the new Mike Farris release Salvation in Lights and is an in-demand session player in Nashville. Moonlight in Memphis is from Ericson’s debut solo album, The Blue Side, which climbed to the top 30 on the Americana Chart.

Steve Gibb is an award winning composer and guitarist. His amazing instrumental versatility, combined with his ability to compose in many styles, enables him to transcend the musical genres with ease. Steve has worked with many of today’s leading composers and is in much demand as a session guitarist. Steve has appeared on stage in the title role for the musical, The Buddy Holly Story and is currently performing in the Tony Award winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys.  Steve’s Lost in You on this touching compilation is soothing, nurturing and passionate.

JanElaine Eller is not what you might expect. When you first see her, you might expect the performance to match the pretty, petite, and gentle natured person. Then she sits at a piano and her powerhouse performances resonate the chords of your soul. Her songs are broad and sweeping and take hearts soaring, while also relaying a grace that leaves listeners with a sense of peace and well-being. Vocal to Turning Wheels is performed by the talented Joy Summerville.

Charlie Souza is the original Tom Petty band bass player. He was also the bass player for the pop/rock legend bands Fortress and The Tropics. Charlie has performed, collaborated and recorded with Bill Champlin (Chicago), Joe Walsh, Jim Horn, Greg Allman, Cactus, Santana keyboardist Leon Patillo, The Darrell Mansfield Christian Band, White Witch & Gale Force. Charlie has carved out a successful career as a session musician, writer, producer, band leader and, along with other members of The Tropics, is a recent nominee to the Florida Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Listen to "The Rose" from Charlie’s "You Can Live Your Dream" CD.

Kirsten Vogelsang is both a composer and a professional cellist. Kirsten has taken her background and fluency in string and orchestral writing and applied it to new and crossover genres such as electroacoustic and trance. As a Sundance Fellow, Kirsten began her filmscoring career in 1990, scoring over 20 films and TV productions. As a session musician, her countless recording highlights in film and television include X Men, Star Trek, and The Last Samurai. Composing for the dance and concert music world, Kirsten’s performance list includes Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Whitney Museum. Kirsten’s tender track on this CD is Mamas Know (Kyra’s Lullaby).

Peter Combe is indisputably Australia’s finest and most loved children’s songwriter and recording artist. His wonderfully diverse music delights both children and parents alike. With three ARIA Awards, the American equivalent of a Grammy, Peter was the first Children’s artist in Australia to ever receive an ARIA Award. Seven of Peter’s albums have received Gold Awards and two Platinum Awards. He has written songs for all of his four children with Child of Mine written for his daughter Alice. Daughter Emily Combe, whose band, The Finishing School, is a recipient of the 2006 L.A. Music Award for “Best Pop Artist of the Year,” provides background vocal.

Penka Kouneva is a Sundance Composer Fellow and Hollywood film composer blending her native Eastern-European influences with modern orchestra, Medieval chant, rock, and electronica. To date, she has scored nine independent features, four television films for the SciFi channel, episodic shows on cable TV, and five documentaries. In addition to scoring, Penka is a busy orchestrator on studio films (Pirates of the Carribean III, Matrix 2 & 3, Lizzie McGuire Movie), and on film trailers for the two biggest trailer houses in Los Angeles. Playground was written in tribute to the memory of Laurie Z.®

WorldSound Productions and Sparkle Press graciously thank all the Artists for their generous heartfelt contributions to this CD which is dedicated to the memory of Laurie Z.®

Breathing in the New Year

Breathing in the New Year

According to Joseph Sweeney of Erie Massage Therapy in Erie, Colorado, one of the easiest things you can do for the New Year in taking care of your body, is to stretch your muscles frequently, stand up from the computer keyboard,  go for short walks outside and get fresh air, and practice breathing exercises.

One of the exercises is to inhale deeply through the nose to the count of six and exhale in out the mouth to the count of four (since it’s faster and more complete). Another tip is to TIGHTEN UP all your muscles on the INHALE, and RELEASE all your muscles on the EXHALE… isometric muscle contraction methods. Immediate benefits to you is instant relief and deeper relaxation, as well as increased muscle regeneration. "These exercises help you to get your muscles into a full and relaxed state" Sweeney comments.

You Are Beautiful: Seeing Ourselves

You Are Beautiful: Seeing Ourselves

Many of us do not take the time to notice and acknowledge how beautiful we are as humans. We may be great lovers of beauty, seeing it in the people, places, and things around us, while completely missing it in ourselves. Some of us feel that it is vain to consider our appearance too much, or we may find that when we look at ourselves, all we see are imperfections. Often we come to the mirror with expectations and preconceived notions about beauty that blind us from seeing ourselves clearly. As a result, we miss the beauty that is closest to us, the beauty we are. Sometimes we see our beauty in a shallow way, noticing how well we are conforming to social norms, but failing to see the deeper beauty that shines out from within and that will continue to shine regardless of how we measure up to society’s ideal.

If we can cut through all these obstacles and simply appreciate how beautiful we are, we free up so much energy. We also become less dependent upon the opinions and feedback of others since we become our own greatest admirers. Many of us know that after a great yoga practice or a long, deep meditation, we are more able to see how beautiful we are. This is because we have released some of our baggage, thus unburdening ourselves and summoning forth the spirit that dwells within us. It is the heady combination of the divine spirit and the human body that conveys beauty more accurately than anything else.

To keep ourselves in touch with our own beauty, we can surround ourselves with images that reflect our beauty back to us—photos of a relative or child who has our eyes, images of teachers who embody spirit, or self-portraits that capture our essence in a way that allows us to see ourselves anew. The best way to keep ourselves in touch with our own beauty is to keep looking deeply into our own souls and opening our eyes to the human being we see in the mirror every day.

Starting New: A Moment of Choice

Starting New: A Moment Of Choice

There are times in our lives that lend themselves to starting something new. The beginning of a new year, finishing school, leaving a job, or changing homes—these all are times that turn our minds to fresh starts. Their advantage is that they bring with them the energy of that event, creating a tide of change around them that we can ride to our next shoreline. But we can choose to start anew anytime. In any moment we can decide that a bad day or a relationship that’s gotten off on the wrong foot can be started again. It is a mental shift that allows us to clean the slate and approach anything with fresh eyes, and we can make that choice at any time.

Starting new is most powerful when we focus our attention to what we are choosing to create. Giving all of our attention to the unwanted aspects of our lives allows what we resist to persist. We need to remember to leave enough room in the process of new beginnings to be kind to ourselves, because it takes time to become accustomed to anything new, no matter how much we like it. There is no need to get down on ourselves if we don’t reach our new goals instantly. Instead, we acknowledge the forward motion and choose to reset and start again, knowing that with each choice we learn, grow, and move forward.

Making the choice to start anew has its own energy—it’s a promise made to you. The forward momentum creates a sort of vacuum behind it, pulling toward you all you need to help you continue moving in your chosen direction. Once the journey has begun, it may take unexpected turns, but it never really ends. Like cycles in nature, there are periods of obvious growth and periods of dormancy that signal a time of waiting for the right moment to burst forth. Each time we choose to start anew we dedicate ourselves to becoming the best we are able to be.

Quotations: Making Positive Choices

One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And, the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.
– Eleanor Roosevelt

Every act we perform is a choice, even if we are unaware that we have made a choice. Our unawareness of choice at the level of electrons and atoms gives us the illusion of a mechanical reality. In this way, we appear to be mere victims subject to the whims of a "higher being."

There was a time when artificial sweeteners were reserved for coffee, diet soda, and sugarless candy. Now you can use them when you’re baking cookies or cakes. In fact, changing the ingredients in recipes to fit your diet is common, easy, and tasty, says Riska Platt, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association. "The biggest mistake I see is when people eliminate anything that’s not good for them from a recipe," says Platt, who works with chefs in New York City to help them develop healthier meal options. Instead, substitute fatty ingredients with healthy, lower-calorie ingredients. Use the above seven ways to lose the fat but not the flavor.
