Blogger Deb Simpson wrote a beautiful post about Sheryl Roush and the Heart of the Holidays book. Her post was picked up by The San Diego Special Edition on December 17 and posted for Human Interest posted on The San Diego Beat front page. Click here to view entire post.

Sheryl Roush Releases Heart of the Holidays Book is presented by Debra Simpson at North San Diego Business@Large. Debra says, “San Diego native Sheryl Roush has lead an interesting life and reflects that in the books she publishes.”

Sheryl Roush’s rise in professional speaking, and now as a published author is inspiring. Her early years were hard, filled with tragedy. Yet, she overcame those obstacles and now, with unbridled enthusiasm for life, she uplifts and motivates the best in others.

Sheryl owned several businesses, since age 16, before becoming a full-time inspirational, motivational keynote speaker. Her current business, Sparkle Presentations, an international seminar and training company, offering inspirational programs that rekindle the spirit, raise the bar, and create excitement.

A few years ago, Sheryl came up with an idea to reach out to the women’s community and ask for contributions which she complied into Heart of a Woman, her first book in the Heart Book Series.  It was followed by Heart of a Mother, recounting stories, poems and thoughts about motherhood.

Her current book, Heart of the Holidays, has just been released. To celebrate the release, and give readers a taste of the stories, poems and memories, Sheryl held a book signing event at two Borders this past week.

One of the remarkable things about Sheryl is the ease with which she creates information products. She’s the author of over 40 resources, including audiotapes, CDs, video, CD-Rom, and DVDs. It’s been amazing over the years to watch as she pours her heart into her products. She’s a shining example of how a professional speaker should run a business.

Her other books include Sparkle-Tudes! (scripture plus quotations by and for women), and Heart of a Woman (stories and poems celebrating our inner strength, wisdom and faith). Sheryl is also a contributor to The Princess Principle: Women Helping Women Discovering their Royal Spirit.

She’s coached many in public speaking, training, marketing, business and is the creator of the Olympic Training Center Speakers Bureau, the AIDS/Foundation-San Diego Speakers Bureau, and the Director of Training, US/Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista, CA, volunteer position coaching 30 Olympians and volunteers in public speaking. She’s coached international officers and candidates, and World Champions of Public Speaking for Toastmasters International. Her clients include celebrities from Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1 and the Star Trek series.

Twice honored for her service to women in the community, Sheryl was crowned “Ms. Heart of San Diego” and is this year’s “Queen of Hope.” She’s a remarkable woman, someone I’m proud to all a friend. Now you know her too!

Heart of an Animal Lover

Heart of a Mother, Heart of a Woman, Stories| No Comments »

One of the things that I love about living from the heart is the deeper connection it has given me with animals. Our words can lie. Our energy never lies. Like animals, the heart is authentic. Animals respond authentically to the energy of things, because rarely do they speak our words. Without the distraction of verbal communication and mental chatter, they can be free to see things more as they actually are. From this presence and direct relationship, we receive their bottomless unconditional love and forgiveness!

Unless, that is, they feel threatened. In which case animals can balk at the slightest motion, even if it is not an attack. And in this, they are beautiful mirrors from our own hearts, showing us where the antiquated survival strategies in our own animal nervous systems and lower brains have taken us over. Like my cat, who will forgive me in an instant if I accidentally step on his tail or land on him when doing yoga by mistake, but has an absolute war of terror going on with the sound of any innocent plastic bag rustling as groceries are taken from it. There is no question that animals are mirrors of our own consciousness. Like other events in life but perhaps more immediately obvious, animals reflect back to us whether we are at peace, insecure, predatory, aggressive. In some ways, animals are a feedback device like the emWave biofeedback technology, which reflects our heart rhythms in real time, showing us whether we are truly in a state of internal order and happiness or just deluding ourselves in our denial and chronic stress.

“Keepers”

Heart of a Mother, Heart of a Woman, Heart of the Holidays, Stories| 1 Comment »

I grew up with practical grandparents who had been frightened by the Great Depression in the 1930’s. A grandmother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a Name for it.. A grandfather who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Grandpa in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Grandma in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things: a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that repairing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there’d always be more.

But then my grandfather died, and on that clear fall night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away…never to return. So… While we have it.. it’s best we love it… And care for it… And fix it when it’s broken….. And heal it when it’s sick.

This is true… For marriage… And old cars… And children with bad report cards….. And dogs and cats with bad hips…. And aging
parents…. And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special… And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thinks I am a ‘keeper,’ so I’ve sent it to the people I think of in the same way. Good friends are like stars . . . you don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.

POEM: Make Me An Instrument of Thy Peace

Heart of a Mother, Heart of a Woman, Heart of the Holidays, Poems| No Comments »

Make Me An Instrument of Thy Peace
St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Message of Gratitude from Rhonda Byrne, creator of The Secret

A Secret Scrolls message from Rhonda Byrne, Creator of The Secret

Two words which will change your life!

There are two words that, when spoken, have the most unfathomable power to completely change your life. Two words which, when they pass your lips, will be the cause of bringing absolute joy and happiness to you. Two words that will create miracles in your life. Two words that will wipe out negativity. Two words that will bring you abundance in all things. Two words which, when uttered and sincerely felt, will summon all the forces and vibrations in the Universe to move all things for you.

The only thing standing between you, happiness, and the life of your dreams, are two words…

THANK YOU

Gratitude is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to transform your life. If you become truly grateful, you will magnetize absolute joy to you everywhere you go, and in everything you do. In fact, without gratitude, nothing can ever change. Your life will change to the degree that you use gratitude and begin to feel grateful. If you are just a little bit grateful, your life will change a little bit. If you are very grateful, your whole life will change. If you live gratitude every single day, you will become one of the greatest human beings on the planet, and the light of your life will uplift our world.

The greatest human beings who have ever lived showed us the way with gratitude, and by their example became shining lights in our history. Einstein said "thank you" hundreds of times every single day! Ancient wisdom dating back thousands of years gave us the truth about gratitude. Every single religion speaks of giving thanks. All the sages and saviors of the world demonstrated the use of gratitude in all their teachings.

Of the thousands of letters we receive from people whose lives have become miracles after experiencing The Secret, every single one of them has made gratitude their way of life. It is impossible to be negative when you are giving thanks. It is impossible to criticize or blame when you are feeling grateful. It is impossible to feel sad when you are in gratitude. Most people are sporadically grateful, however, to change your life with gratitude, a new way of learning how to be truly grateful is what will bring unlimited happiness into your life.

So how do you live in gratitude? Begin your day by feeling grateful. Be grateful for the bed you just slept in, the roof over your head, the carpet or floor under your feet, the running water, the soap, your shower, your toothbrush, your clothes, your shoes, the car that you drive, your job, your friends, your refrigerator that keeps your food cold. Be grateful for the weather, the sun, the sky, the birds, the trees, the grass, the rain, and the flowers. Be grateful for the stores that make it so easy to buy the things you need, the restaurants, the utilities and services and electrical appliances that make your life effortless. Be grateful for magazines and the books that you read. Be grateful for the chair that you sit on, and the pavement that you walk on. Be grateful for your favorite music that sweeps you away, and for movies that make you feel good. Be grateful for your phone that connects you with people, for your computer, for the electricity that lights up your life. Be grateful for air travel that flies you everywhere. Be grateful for the roads and traffic lights that keep the traffic in order. Be grateful to those who built our bridges. Be grateful for your pet, for your child, for your loved ones, for your eyes that enable you to read this. Be grateful for your imagination. Be grateful that you can think! Be grateful that you can speak. Be grateful that you can laugh and smile. Be grateful that you can breathe! Be grateful that you are alive! Be grateful that you are You! Be grateful that there are two words that can change your life!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The more that you practice gratitude the more deeply you will feel it in your heart, and the depth of the feeling is the key. The more deeply and sincerely you feel it, the more you will bring absolute bliss and happiness on every single subject. Watch what happens in your life when you practice gratitude every single day and in every single moment and in every opportunity that you can. Remember, if you are criticizing, you are not being grateful. If you are blaming, you are not being grateful. If you are complaining, you are not being grateful. If you are feeling tension, you are not being grateful. If you are rushing, you are not being grateful. If you are in a bad mood, you are not being grateful.

To understand the power and the magic of gratitude, you have to experience it for yourself. So why not begin by deciding to find 100 things a day to be grateful for? As you practice gratitude every day, it won’t take long before gratitude is your natural state of being, and when it happens you will have unlocked one of the greatest Secrets to Life.

There is just one other thing that I want you to know about Gratitude…..

When you are giving thanks, you FEEL GOOD!

Rhonda Byrne
The Secret… bringing joy to billions.

STORY: Princess Diaries

Heart of a Woman, Stories| 1 Comment »

Princess Diaries-

My brother and I decided to enter the acting business when he was twelve and I was ten. After countless auditions and tiring drives to San Francisco, a mere hour and fifteen minutes from our hometown of Modesto, we finally landed a role as extras in the Disney movie, The Princess Diaries. I was a freshman in high school and my brother was a sophomore. We were cast to be students at the prep school the main character, Mia, attended.

I was excited to be able to miss a whole week of school but I didn’t realize how much work I would be getting myself into. My brother, mother, and I had to get up before dawn each morning to get to the parking lot in San Francisco and load into the bus that would take us to a holding area for the extras. We were two uniformed child extras amidst a crowd of about 100 other kids, all with the dream of getting on camera. I had always been the “tag-along” child. My brother had wild expectations of landing a movie role and making it big. I just wanted to come along so I could get out of school early. In fact, I couldn’t even act! I only had taken one acting class in my short lifetime, as opposed to the weekly classes my brother attended. I never wanted to play someone else. I always wondered, why do I need to be a character when I like to just be myself?

The experience was a long day mainly full of waiting. When we finally did get picked to get sent up to set, my brother, mother, and I would load onto the bus and get dropped off feet from the set. The woman immediately chose my brother and I to stand in front of the camera and pretend we were talking. After what seemed like thirty shots later, my brother and I ran out of things to talk about. We decided to just “lip-sync” the conversation.

I was dressed in a schoolgirl skirt with knee socks and in the frigid San Francisco weather, I was standing there shaking after what felt like an hour or two. Also, my legs were tired and I just wanted to sit. I knew that if I asked the director for a break, he would put someone else in my spot and I would miss my chance at getting on screen so I just sucked it up. Being minors, we got mandatory meals, breaks, and study periods. My mother also accompanied us everywhere. Looking back, I think of all the sacrifices she made to get us a split second in a movie. She had constantly taken off work to drive back and forth to San Francisco. All she wanted was for us to be happy and as soon as we got sick of it, she would stop taking us. I never felt pushed, prodded, or manipulated into auditioning for a part by my parents. They were the perfect supporters.

The other extras were interesting folks. Most of them were cocky and certain their big break was just around the corner. They tried almost anything to get close to the stars of the movie, Anne Hathaway, Mandy Moore, and Julie Andrews. Luckily, the three stars were down to earth and very inviting. I remember one boy in particular was almost positive he was Mandy Moore’s new best friend. Any chance he had, he would inch closer and closer to her in a scene and brag that they were going out for drinks once the day had wrapped. My brother and I simply laughed at this kid.

Overall, I’m glad I experienced this opportunity because it made me realize this business is not for me. I can’t stand around all day repeating the same thing over and over. I also realized that for only $100 dollars a day, I’d rather stay in school and get a job that will make me more than that. I have fond memories of the experience and I even have the proof on DVD so I can show my friends I was in a movie. I know exactly where I am in every school scene, even if it’s not on the screen. I know that there are many people out there more enthusiastic about acting and getting their big break. My best advice is to not give up but also be careful not to get too discouraged if you don’t get a part right away. Don’t beat yourself up for not getting a part. There is nothing you can do because they are looking for someone different than you. Your part will come, just be patient. Don’t change just because they needed a blonde or someone skinnier. Don’t compromise the person God made you into; because He made the perfect role for you, you just have to figure it out.

Embracing Womanhood

Heart of a Mother, Heart of a Woman, Tips & Trivia| No Comments »

Woman: Embracing Womanhood

There are many ways and myriad reasons for women to honor and embrace all that they are. And when any individual woman chooses to do so, all women collectively move closer to becoming what they are truly capable of being. By honoring her experience and being willing to share it with others—both male and female—she teaches as she learns. When she can trust herself and her inner voice, she teaches those around her to trust her as well. Clasping hands with family members and friends, coworkers and strangers in a shared walk through the journey of life, she allows all to see the self-respect she possesses and accepts their respect, too, that is offered through look, word, and deed.

When a woman can look back into her past, doing so without regret and instead seeing only lessons that brought her to her current strength and wisdom, she embraces the fullness of her experience. She helps those around her to build upon the past as she does. And when she chooses to create her desires, she places her power in the present and moves forward with life into the future.

Seeing her own divinity, a woman learns to recognize the divinity in all women. She then can see her body as a temple, appreciating its feminine form and function, regardless of what age or stage of life she finds herself. She can enjoy all that it brings to her experience and appreciate other women and their experiences as well. Rather than seeing other women as competition, she can look around her to see the cycle of life reflected in the beauty of her sisters, reminding her of her own radiance should she ever forget. She can then celebrate all the many aspects that make her a being worthy of praise, dancing to express the physical, speaking proudly to express her intellect, sharing her emotions, and leading the way with her spiritual guidance. Embracing her womanhood, she reveals the facets that allow her to shine with the beauty and strength of a diamond to illuminate her world.

Professor Saw Talent – Now Student is Published

Thank you again, this has been a great opportunity and experience for me to be published in Heart of the Holidays. A professor in college once asked me if I had ever considered a career in writing science. I hadn’t, didn’t even know it existed. Not sure who I thought wrote  those text books and magazine articles. 🙂 Anyway, it was one of those pivotal moments in my life that I’ve never forgotten. When someone you admire thinks you can do something, you believe you can do it. Thirty years later I still wonder do I have any talent for writing, could I do this?

Let me know the next time you write a book, I’d love to contribute if you’ll have me. I’ve even started a list!!

Take care and have a wonderful holiday season!

God bless,
Carlee Westbrook
