Reflections on 2010
by Sheryl Roush, December 23, 2010

As I look back at this year, I reflect upon the "most interesting" events of this year, both personally and professionally, and share some highlights here. The immediate metaphor that comes to mind is a ROLLER COASTER. There’s been much joy and matching sadness, still with gratitude throughout.

Speaking Engagements:
As an inspirational speaker and business skills trainer it’s a pleasure to be of service for repeat clients (County of Los Angeles, Healthcare Financial Management Association, Lake Elsinore Outlets, Parks & Recreation, Project Management Institute, the Women in Business Symposium, and the World Famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal "Safari" Park) as well as new organizations (California Ass’n of School Board Officials, Global Boating Women, National Ass’n of Quick Printers Business Owners, and Welk Resorts).

Emcee for a most unique (and global) event, Del Mar Kiwanis hosts The Ugly Dog Contest in March at the County Fairgrounds (I’m a cat lover). Videos went international and made the news.

I opened the San Diego Summer Pops, for a Lincoln Military Housing sponsored 4th of July Concert for enlisted service members and their families, with the distinct honor of introducing famed conductor and award-winning songwriter Marvin Hamlisch.

While keynote closing the state Dept. of Mental Health in January, I got snowed in with attendees for 3 days at the Embassy Suites in Norman, Oklahoma… and ended up speaking to the hotel staff in the kitchen complimenting their attitude and shining service through it all.

On September 14, I had the pleasure of opening the Central California Womens’ Conference to 3,500 women, delivering the morning keynote on "Sparkle-Tude!®  The Heart of a Woman" on a theatre stage in the Fresno Convention Center.   Marie Osmond (spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, Dancing With the Stars) graciously commented that she was MY closing act! (We also did a live 6am TV interview.)

Locally, this was my tenth consecutive year coaching the San Diego Charger Girls cheerleaders (28 on the squad) in their public speaking and media interviewing skills.

Radio Shows and Interviews:
Still on a high from Montel Williams endorsing my Heart of a Military Woman book on his show in November 2009, I was also interviewed on The Coaching Show, Raven Blair Davis, Skills Radio with Brian Olds, Purpose Guy, Catrice Jackson, Minoshia Gail Humphrey, Army Wives Network, "Bringing Your Heart to Work" on Robin Hardy, Dr. Helena Steiner Hornstyn, Deb Simpson, Red River Writers, Jean Bailey Robor, Angie Strader’s What’s Your Bottom Line?, Fresno KYNO…

Awards:
While we’re on the topic of books… my Heart of a Military Woman book received the 2009 Best Spiritual & Inspirational Award (nonfiction) from the San Diego Book Awards Association.

Book Signings:
Contributors to the 6-title Heart Book Series signed copies with me in California at BORDERS in Long Beach, and at the Book Warehouse at Lake Elsinore Outlets, including Hollywood Blockbuster recording artists Penka Kouneva and Kirstin Vogelsang, and Charger Girl cheerleader Tonya Helman (Founder of Sweethearts for Soldiers.  My Heart of a Woman book was purchased for international publishing rights in Mexico, fully translated into Spanish, as Corazón de Mujer.

Toastmasters:
Since active in my 23-year membership and support of Toastmasters International, I spoke at several Districts throughout the US this year, as well as at the International Convention, then was quoted in a couple issues of the Toastmaster Magazine.

Family:

Several notable events in this category. My brother Steve rebounded from Stage 4 Melanoma Skin Cancer, at this this writing, scans show no traces whatsoever! (Prayers and Laughter work!) Cousin Janet and Paul Stannard hosted a joyous celebration at their home for 30 relatives to see Steve and his wife Mary from Hawaii.

Mom turned 80 years old in June, with a SURPRISE PARTY — with a SAN DIEGO PADRES Baseball theme!  Keeping the dinner a complete surprise from her was a notable accomplishment for all family and friends present! (Pictured: Hiram, Beverly, and me)

December 11th, we celebrated Dad’s 83rd Birthday… a toasty 80 degrees outside and 20 local family members present, we warmed up my new house, without setting off the new smoke alarms. My oldest brother Rick (a Dean at the University of Melbourne) and his 15-year-old daughter, Ali, came to visit California from Australia for three weeks before Christmas. Ali stayed with me for a lovely ten days, watching every episode I had taped of Stargate SG:1.

Such is the circle of life… after 14 remarkable years, my orange Tabby kitty, Tigger, passed November 17, from a tumor on his brain. This brilliant feline helped me write five books and was the subject of many of my stories and speeches. I cried to the depths of my soul; yet thankful that I recorded his purring on my iPhone months ago.

Dear friend, business adviser and speaking colleague, John Reddish, passed at 64, to Lymphoma cancer. He expanded my thinking, focused my creativity and guided my direction. Mine was only one of thousands he touched in the National Speakers Association.

Uncle Laurence A. Weisser, II, passed on December 9, at 96. He was my school bus driver not retiring until my graduation from high school. His bride, Wardene (my father’s sister), had asked me to officiate the funeral years ago for both of their services, which I was truly honored to do. His favorite upbeat "cowboy" music (Bob Wills, Rex Allen) was played as loved ones entered and left the celebration… with laughter and applause between shared tears and shared stories.

Sci-Fi Fun:
With Comic-Con International San Diego being hosted in my native town, I was asked to "handle" (shuttle, coffee and food needs) Sci-Fi stars again this year, including Stan Lee "Spiderman," James Marsden "Spike" on Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, Kevin Sorbo Hercules and Andromeda… plus Star Trek cast members Brent Spiner "Data," Marina Sirtis "Counselor Troi," Michael Dorn as the Klingon"Worf,"  and LeVar Burton "Geordi LaForge."

New this year, I worked with the Warehouse 13 cast: Eddie McClintock "Pete,"  Saul Rubinek "Artie," and CCH Pounder "Mrs. Fredrick" and the sage village woman in Avatar. (Last year I was personal assistant to "Mr. Spock" Leonard Nimoy for 4 amazing days.) A personal thrilled was meeting the adorable Colin Ferguson "Sheriff Carter" from Eureka backstage before his panel, offering opening jokes for his appearance.

Wedding Celebration:
April 13th, my dear friend, Debbi McGill married Peter Alexis…  Peter’s Greek Orthodox uncle was sick and unable to conduct the services–and with less than 12 hours notice–Debbi asked if I would officiate the ceremonies. What an honor! Overlooking the Pacific Ocean at La Jolla Shores and pelicans flying above head, it was truly a lovely occasion. (Not sticking to the script, I ad-libbed, with the congregation breaking into laughter.) Their surprise gift from me was ELVIS (since Peter had mailed an invite to Graceland), with James Kruk, an award-winning Tribute Artist, performing a private concert for the reception guests. Amazing talent!

Living "Green"
After nine months of looking for a new house (only 4.3 miles from my parents), we finally found it — or it found me!  It’s a completely rebuilt "brand-new 1960" 3-bedroom house with garage (for my new Hybrid car) and yards. All new high-efficiency applicances, tile, cabinets, water heater, toilets, carpet, etc. Adorable, cozy and pristine. Dad has cleaned up the yard, trees and hedges, and we hung gutters to capture rainwater to conserve water. Brother Steve and wife Mary from Hawaii bought and planted five dwarf fruit trees in the backyard. Dad is currently building the frame for my vegetable garden.

What Matters:
Reflecting over this year, it’s indeed been a "Roller Coaster" — up’s and down’s — twists and turns — yet it’s been one exciting "ride."  But I’ve not been alone on this… and cherish dearly each person on the ride with me. Family and Friends, Clients, Audiences… Life is good! Count your blessings. I know I do! Here’s to 2011!

Inspirational Stories from Real People, December 3, 2009

By Angela Y. Strader "Angie Strader"

I just received my copy of Heart of a Military Woman. As soon as I opened it, I couldn’t put it down! The stories within are touching, inspirational and you can tell they really do come from the heart. It’s important to remember that the contributors are real women and some men connected to the United States military either as an active duty member, reserve, dependent or family member and not professional writers. I enjoy reading work from people who write as they talk. I can feel the pride and sometimes the pain each contributor went through in their military experience. I also feel the passion within each of them as they shared their story.

To be fair, I should tell you that my own military story is included in Heart of a Military Woman (pg 27), so I may be a little biased, but in truth, I did get the book yesterday and read it until I fell asleep last night. I am proud to have my short story published within this book along side the other outstanding members of our military family.

This book will make a thoughtful gift for anyone who is connected to the military. It is a soft-cover keepsake book that will look beautiful on any coffee table.

Heart of a Military Woman

Book Contributors Announced!

After one year as a concept, the Heart of a Military Woman book becomes a reality!

It all started when Eldonna Lewis Fernandez met Sheryl Roush, who was autographing her Heart of a Woman books (next to Robert Kiyosaki and Bernadette Peters) at the Book Expo America in Los Angeles, California, last summer. As she personally inscribed Eldonna’s copy, Sheryl mentioned her forthcoming title, Heart of a Woman in Business, suggesting Eldonna contibute. She did, and her story, "Creative Success" was accepted to be published.

Later that Autumn, Eldonna suggested a collaboration for the book honoring our active military and veterans. After one year of brainstorming and collecting true short stories, poems and tributes, Heart of a Military Woman went to press yesterday, co-authored by the two women.

An abundance of submissions were received from 140 contributors, totaling over a 106,000 word count. Surviving five rounds of cuts, selections were made, congratulations notices were sent, and here are the results:

ABOUT SOUL SHINE
They say wellness is a journey.
Anyone have a map?

We and many of our friends have often wished for a road map on the journey to wellness. There isn’t one of course because like a snow flake or fingerprint, each of us is unique. We can’t promise that acupuncture is what you need or that you’ll feel better on a gluten-free diet. But we can let you know what paths exist to your destination, suggest routes that have worked for travelers before you, and connect you with the best practitioners in your area so that together you can decide what’s right for you.

We know what it’s like to spend hours at your computer researching therapies you know nothing about. We know how it feels to be desperate for answers but not know who—or what—to trust. We know from personal experience. At Soul Shine, we’ve done the research for you. We’ve personally screened all the practitioners in our network to bring you the best of the best in both traditional and non-traditional approaches to wellness. These practitioners all share the Soul Shine philosophy of a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness.

If not a map, Soul Shine is the guiding light that connects you with the knowledge, the people and the resources to achieve true physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation. We help you look at the big picture to achieve lasting and meaningful results. Most importantly, the Soul Shine staff, practitioners, and community of other like-minded individuals are here to support you on your journey every step of the way. We hope you’ll join us to discover what it is that makes your soul shine.

25 Ways To Say Thanks

Thanksgiving, Tips & Trivia| No Comments »

25 Ways To Say Thanks

As I look back through the archives of "Living Wisely," I see that gratitude has been the theme of several of my articles around the holiday season. The old words seem to drum home the importance of being grateful for what
we have. This year, in the face of financial crises and the loss of veritable institutions that we’ve relied on for employment it may be more important than ever to find a silver lining in order to endure. In a time when our feelings probably outweigh our ability to express them, I thought it might be helpful to explore some ways to say thanks and experience feeling grateful.

1. Say Thank-You with your eyes
Make more eye contact with people. Really connect with the gratitude for being alive by connecting with another human through their eyes.

2. Write a Thank-You note
Write a note that thanks someone for being in your life without them having done anything or given you anything recently.

3. Tell people what they mean to you
Do not let an opportunity go by to tell someone what they mean to you personally and/or professionally. Let people know how they make a difference in your life.

4. Perform a Random-Act-of-Kindness
Anonymously, do something outrageously kind or generous for someone else. Never tell.

5. Create a daily ritual that expresses gratitude
List five things a day you are grateful for, light a candle, say a prayer, tell someone you love them, send out a daily email to your closest buds. Come up with something that will daily put you in contact with gratitude.

6. Volunteer
Hold a hand or lend a hand. Just help someone who needs help more than you do. It will give you amazing perspective on your life.

7. Pick up a treasure
When you see something that reminds you of someone you care about, pick it up for them and give it to them ‘just because’.

8. Make a Donation (even if you think you can’t afford to)
Sharing your money, expecting nothing in return, is a powerful way to show you are grateful for what you have.

9. Write or create something and donate the proceeds
Create something that can be sold to support a cause.

10. Give of yourself
The gift of your time and attention makes a great statement about how much someone means to you

11. Make a kid’s day
Giving a child a special day that will forever be a happy memory will be a win-win you won’t soon forget

12. Write a letter to the editor

If someone in your town (a teacher, a neighbor, a service provider) did something really great, write to the editor of your town newspaper to give that person a little extra acknowledgement. Tell people how this person went out of their way to help. You’ll warm some hearts and maybe cause of positive ripple effect for the person you thanked publicly.

13. Bring a friend along for the ride
If you get an opportunity of a lifetime or get ushered up your career ladder by a helping hand, bring someone you know with you. Do what you can to bring them along. Be that helping hand to the next person.

14. Share a meal
‘Breaking bread’ with somebody or a group a people is a great way to express your thanks for them. Serve them as if they were kings.

15. Park yourself in an awesome spot in nature
A majestic view helps to humble your ego and help you appreciate the richness of your world.

16. Finger paint
Get dirty finger-painting and feel the energy going through your fingers as you press through the paint on to the paper. Feel the privilege of having a body that works.

17. Plant a tree or some flowers (depending on region!)
There is a sanctity to putting living things in the earth to encourage their growth. You don’t have to be a ‘tree hugger’ to appreciate what the earth has given you by giving something back to it.

18. Dedicate something to someone significant to you
Say thank you by honoring someone with a dedication. Whether it’s something you have written or a performance or a book, or maybe even a project, dedicate it as an acknowledgment.

19. List the people that make your life easier
Write down a list of people that are in your life that do things with you or for you that make your life a little easier. Imagine if they were not there and how much would be on your plate.

20. Give away all you no longer need
Taking stock of your stuff and seeing it go on to people that can use it, gives you an appreciation for all you have.

21. Make someone something
Engage your creativity, suspend judgment and express your thanks for someone by making them a gift. Whether you have a particular craft or talent is not necessary. Share your creation and tell the receiver what you did to create it.

22. Help someone feel important
Sing Happy Birthday at your own birthday party to someone whose birthday closely follows yours. Acknowledge someone else publicly while you hold the floor. Include someone at the ‘head table’ of an event who would not expect to be  there. Do something for someone else’s self-esteem.

23. Document someone else’s life
Dust off your camcorder and record an oral history by a family member, friend or interesting acquaintance. You  can even forget the camera and just get someone to talk about the stories of their life. Just when you think you’ve been through it all or you’ve hear it all, you’ll fill with the appreciation for the journey we are all on.

24. Kidnap a friend or loved one for a day devoted to them
Show up unexpectedly and steal someone away for a day of activities handpicked for your friend’s enjoyment. Take  them to eat their favorite kind of food, take them to a movie they would love to see, take them to their favorite sporting event or shopping place. Plan a day that has nothing to do with you. Devote it to them.

25. Say Thank You and Mean It
‘Thank you’ can sometimes take on the same worn familiarity as your most comfy slippers and lose it’s true value. Pay  more attention as you say it and really mean it.

Giddy, ecstatic, humbled, moved, awed—grateful.
However, the emotion registers for you, each of these actions can likely get you there. It is that intense  feeling of being alive that we crave. Despite any troubles we may be dealing with, remember the feeling these 25 ways give you and recreate it every day. That is living. That is worth Thanksgiving.

Type-A Mom Gift Guide – Gifts for Moms
November 7, 2008

Books have always been a favorite holiday and birthday present both for me to give and receive, but some books tend to make better gifts than others. Heart of a Woman in Business by Sheryl L. Roush is one of those books. As a stay-at-home mom who just recently launched an online business, this book could not have entered my life at a better time. This small, square bedside tome makes for perfect evening reading.

Buy Heart of a Woman in Business here

Divided into fourteen sections with headings such as “Inspirations for the Heart,” “Light Moments,” and “Best Practices, Strategies & Ideas,” this work not only provides enjoyment for any woman who has struggled to combine work and family, worked hard to excel in her career, or launched a business of her own, but it also offers valuable tips and advice from one woman to another.

Author Sheryl Roush shares with the reader not only her best practices and suggestions, but she has also assembled a marvelous collection of inspirational quotes and wonderfully written passages from highly successful men and women.  One such passage that I’ve found particularly inspirational is from Kimberly Anne’s “What is Your Occupassion?”  She writes,

I remember one of my girlfriends in elementary school who said that she wanted to be a flight attendant when she grew up…She still loves being a flight attendant.  It’s what I call her ‘occupassion.’  We’re not all like that, though.  I certainly wasn’t.  I didn’t realize my calling, so to speak, until I was forty-two years old.  I used to secretly think that there was something wrong with me because I’d start looking for something else whenever I was in a position for a few years.  The realist in me seemed to always pursue jobs within the same field, but that thing in me that wanted to feel fulfilled by the work I did still yearned for something – something it wasn’t getting.

This work is not only something that I have been able to relate to, but have found to be simultaneously inspirational.  I highly recommend checking out this book as well as the others in the Heart Book Series for the women who hold your heart this holiday season.

Type-A Mom Gift Guide – Gifts for Moms
Monday, 10 November 2008

When I agreed to review this book, I was thinking of my own experiences as a Mom (two young children and a third due in April). I didn’t stop and think about the fact that I lost my own Mom to cancer last year, and every single thought in this book would bring it all back.

Still, I’m glad I got to read it. I cried all the way through the “Loss and Grieving” section, and the “A Mother’s Love” section, and especially through “Mom’s Pink Robe.” They got me: those collections of stories, personal and real; the poems that somehow captured my exact feelings; the quotations that succinctly and beautifully summed it up in a line or two.

Heart of a Mother is written by Sheryl L. Roush, an international speaker and author. Her website is www.SherylRoush.com. You can purchase the book here : $16.95 for paperback.

More Details

The book begins with a section called “10 Ways to Open Your Heart to Your Mother,” and it’s an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to deepen and improve the Grown-Up Child-Mom relationship. The rest of the book is divided into sections which are arranged alphabetically, from “Adopted with Love” to “Making a Difference” to “Raising Spiritually-Centered Kids” to “Worthiness.” At the very back of the book is a section of Journaling Worksheets; there is space to write directly on them in the book, or they could easily be copied.

This is a great collection for any Mom – for your mother-in-law, your daughter who just had her first baby, your grandmother, your Mom, or even for yourself. It’s the kind of book that you can flip through on a whim and find yourself crying and laughing within ten minutes of reading time. There is a spiritual element within the book, but most is not “religion-specific,” so to speak, so the book easily accommodates people of all faith.

The Bottom Line

The best recommendation I can give is this: if my Mom were still with me, this book would definitely be one of my gifts to her this Christmas.

National Authors Day:
Celebrated by North County Authors & Poets in San Diego

National Authors Day was celebrated yesterday in San Diego County’s northern-most area of Oceanside, next to Camp Pendleton’s Marine Corp Base, as the North County Authors and Poets (NCAP) hosted a full-day free event, themed "So You Want to Be An Author!"

Covered in its entirety by local television station KOCT-TV (www.koct.org), The Oceanside Channel, and reporter Faamasani S. Unutoa, the special story will air mid-November. KOCT is a non-profit Corporation that provides public, educational and government access programming and services on Cox Communications Channels 18 and 19, as well as on AT&T.

Open
to the public free of charge and hosted at the Oceanside Civic Center Library, the event featured 32 local published authors and poets, reading from their works, sharing tips and offering inspiration for those wanting to become authors and know more about the publishing business. The Community Room was filled to capacity with eager attendees sponging up the information shared.

Library Director Deborah Polich welcomed everyone to the event, and congratulated the NCAP members and guests, adding her thanks for keeping the passion for reading and writing alive and healthy. She was followed by Anna McElroy, Head Librarian, making her welcoming remarks, and introducing the day’s Moderator, Dr. Elizabeth Yahn Williams.

PUBLISHING: Then-and-Now
Keynote presenter was Dr. Robert Goodman, owner of Silvercat, a San Diego based publishing firm. His comments  addressed publishing then-and-now, with all the changes that have occurred in the industry, and technology’s part in that. Twenty years ago, some 70,000 books were published each year, whereas in 2007 there were 412,000. "Marketing has become a major challenge…the average shelf-life of a book in stores is three weeks. There are fewer bookstores, replaced by megastores (CostCo, WalMart) which carry books." He also addressed eBooks, On-Demand printing, On-Line Readers (Amazon’s Kindle), On-Line Review Journals, and Virtual Book Clubs. Boldy predicting "The bookstore of the future, in 10-15 years, will be a vending machine," with much of the audience agreeing with him. Goodman is the
co-founder and past president of Publishers & Writers of San Diego, co-founder and faculty member of the La Jolla Writers Conference, and a Board Member of the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), formerly the Publishing Marketing Alliance (PMA).

The morning’s readings were offered by authors and poets: Roger Conlee (Counterclockwise), Jennifer Kise (The Birthday Surprise), L.
