Women Step Up as Men Lose Jobs

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — At first glance, the scene radiates domestic bliss.
March 20, 2009

Click USA Today link and story here.

Caitlin Lawson, 17, races into the dining room to report that she has been accepted at her favorite state college. Alex Lawson, 49, a longtime auto sales executive, wraps his daughter in a bear hug. Beaming nearby is mom Antonia, 50, aka "Tuppy," whose colorful works of ceramic art fill the family’s immaculate suburban home.

But like many images in these ruthless times, this picture deceives.

The Lawson home is spotless because it’s for sale so they can reduce their debt. Alex has been unemployed for nearly a year; in January, he had a stress-induced stroke. Tuppy became the financial head of household overnight: She has abandoned her decade-in-the-making art career and taken a sales job at the local Apple store to keep her brood, which includes another daughter in college, solvent.

"It’s all so bizarre," says Tuppy, head tilted, looking like someone who has just been told the moon really is made out of cheese. "But I’m going to do what I have to do, and do it the best I can."

Throughout the USA, moms such as Tuppy are rushing to the helm of the family ship.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
67% of women with children under 18 work
and women make up 46% of the labor pool.

But this recession could soon make women a majority of America’s workforce: 82% of the 2.5 million jobs lost since November were held by men.

Behind that cold statistic is an often heated rearrangement of the family dynamic. With gender roles and responsibilities being radically redefined, wives now face the pressure inherent in being the sole breadwinner while also retaining their household responsibilities. Meanwhile, husbands must reconstruct their definition of contributing to the family enterprise, often swapping a paycheck for a broom.

Working mothers — and just a few fathers, as many declined to talk — reveal equal parts pride in leaping into the breach, and frustration that things have come to this. Some express relief at seeing a husband develop new at-home skills; others despair when a spouse simply shuts down.

What all of them exude is an ability to focus uncomplainingly on taking care of business.

"Times are a-changing, and you got to roll with the times," says Christina Fekas-Gorman, 34, of San Diego, a secretary in the county offices who recycles cans for cash to cover staples such as diapers for 2-year-old Zoe.

Husband Sean was laid off from a pool repair company a year ago and quickly sank into depression. The couple fought a lot, and he moved out.

"I felt like, ‘I cook, I clean, I shop, and now I’m the only one with a job?’ " she says. "That got physically and mentally draining real fast. He apologized and came back home."

A silver lining?

Some observers say the recession could benefit women’s march toward social equality.

"How interesting that four months of a terrible economy could in a way prove to have more impact than four decades of feminism," says Amy Keroes, founder of mommytrackd.com, a networking site for working mothers.

"The women on the site who are primary breadwinners say they’re proud to be that, but at the same time there’s also a longing to be home," she says. "The economy has simply taken choices away from people."

Past recessions and, notably, World War II also saw women charging into the workforce. But those leaps forward were often accompanied by steps back into the home, says Rebecca Traister, who writes on women and politics for Salon.com. This time, she says, things will be different.

"Feminism laid the groundwork for progress in income, in job positions," she says. "On top of that, now you have a radical shift in the view of fatherhood and its importance. So really what remains to be seen is whether that all translates into (a male) embrace of the drudgery that is domestic work. Either way, these times will require a huge re-imagining of roles."

In the best cases, which the Lawsons typify, these domestic flip-flops are faced with both humor and acceptance.

With Tuppy’s peaceful daily routine — tea and National Public Radio, waiting for inspiration to strike — replaced by a daily job, art is but a distant memory. "I can’t really think of anything I want to create," she says.

Alex has learned to conjure family dinners, searching for recipes when not pumping out upward of 40 résumés a month.

The idea to sell the house was his. Tuppy blanched at first, then agreed it made sense.

"We’d sell anything to help our girls stay on their academic tracks," says Alex, whose eldest is a junior at Stanford University. The family is awaiting word from both girls’ schools about financial aid, which will determine their scholastic fate for next year. Until then, selling the house helps the Lawsons become debt- and mortgage-free. And flexible.

"If I land a job, we can go as far as Timbuktu," Alex says.

In the meantime, Alex says he has a newfound appreciation for the simple pleasure of returning from work to a cooked meal. And Tuppy "finally understands why (Alex) would come home and insist on a glass of wine," she says. "After a day of customers asking questions, I totally get it now."

But for many families, the turmoil that sweeps through the house when a husband is laid off can have the effect of a tornado ripping through a campground.

Life was good for Bridget Culpepper, 37, and her husband, who had a successful career in the mortgage business in Portland, Ore. "Times were great," she says. "He’s a good person."

The freefall was painfully long. With the mortgage industry in decline last year, her husband retreated into online gaming. Culpepper began to work, taking any job she could to help provide for the couple’s two young girls, from freelance Web design to running Spanish-language play groups. "I was sure things would turn around," she says.

Instead, the couple lost their house and cars. Then she nearly lost her will: "I hit a wall, and contemplated suicide."

The couple separated. He lives with his parents and she lives in a rented apartment with the girls.

"This is happening to many people I know," she says. "The ones who do OK are in partnerships in which sometimes you know that the parts might shift. There’s excitement in redefining roles. But a lot of people are having a hard time with it."

Count Teresa Maute-Carr, 37, of Quakertown, Pa., in that group. After her husband lost his longtime construction-related position in February, her job — and health insurance — in the billing department of a local hospital became the family’s lifeline.

"We were always people who lived within our means, we didn’t do anything wrong, so why are we paying for it?" she says, her voice cracking. "I sweat bullets to stay within our budget. Our 6-year-old keeps asking why Daddy is still at home."

And that frustration shoots in her husband’s direction. "I want to yell, ‘Just fix it.’ But I know it’s not his fault."

After a long silence, Maute-Carr laughs. "I will say it’s easier now to ask my husband to unload the dishwasher or to vacuum," she says. "And I do think he might see me differently. He admires me."

‘This is what needs to be done’

There’s mutual admiration in the Lage home in Richmond, Va.

Both Cheryl, 44, and Scott, 41, have roots in the ad production world. When Scott’s 15-year career with Circuit City crashed to a close in January, he was left with part-time employment while Cheryl scrambled for work after seven years at home with twins.

"The way it worked out with us both freelancing is great," she says. "And he’s home a lot more. I loved being with the kids all the time. But this is what needs to be done now."

In the Bretana home in Irvine, Calif., Anne, 42, is impressed with the adjustments made by husband Louis, 43, who has quickly developed go-to dinners and figured out the school schedules of daughters Emilia, 5, and Lily, 3.

"I’m not going to say it wasn’t hard at first, to go from being the guy bringing home the money to being in charge of shopping, but I look at it as a chance to expand some skills," says Louis, whose architecture firm cut him back to half-time recently. That means he has home duty but also needs to make sure clients are happy.

Anne is in the same field; she works 80% and is now pushing to go full-time. "There’s a lot of pressure on me to make sure I’m not laid off," she says.

"I didn’t think I’d be dealing with this sort of situation in my 40s, when our careers and lives should have been well-defined. I thought life would be different. But there you go."

"Job lay-offs, company down-sizing, economic hardships and changing family dynamics are forcing more and more women back into the work-force. As women step-up to take their places in today’s changing job market, it is vital that women have strong business and communication skills. How a woman perceives and presents herself in her company, to her clients or at the all-important interview can make or break her career!" comments Ms. Wilson.

"This workshop series teaches career women, attorneys and executives, teachers and preachers, professionals, small business owners, young women starting their first jobs—core skills including positive voice image, vocal care, handling emotions, telephone skills, running meetings, public speaking skills, impromptu speaking, body language, assertiveness, rapport-building interpersonal and sales tactics," affirms Ms. Roush.

ABOUT SOUL SHINE
They say wellness is a journey.
Anyone have a map?

We and many of our friends have often wished for a road map on the journey to wellness. There isn’t one of course because like a snow flake or fingerprint, each of us is unique. We can’t promise that acupuncture is what you need or that you’ll feel better on a gluten-free diet. But we can let you know what paths exist to your destination, suggest routes that have worked for travelers before you, and connect you with the best practitioners in your area so that together you can decide what’s right for you.

We know what it’s like to spend hours at your computer researching therapies you know nothing about. We know how it feels to be desperate for answers but not know who—or what—to trust. We know from personal experience. At Soul Shine, we’ve done the research for you. We’ve personally screened all the practitioners in our network to bring you the best of the best in both traditional and non-traditional approaches to wellness. These practitioners all share the Soul Shine philosophy of a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness.

If not a map, Soul Shine is the guiding light that connects you with the knowledge, the people and the resources to achieve true physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation. We help you look at the big picture to achieve lasting and meaningful results. Most importantly, the Soul Shine staff, practitioners, and community of other like-minded individuals are here to support you on your journey every step of the way. We hope you’ll join us to discover what it is that makes your soul shine.

Chargers Fans on The Price is Right
TV Game Show – February 26

On January 13th a bus load of 43 women (and 2 men) drove from San Diego to Studio City, California for two morning tapings of the Dr. Phil Show at Paramount Studios, then over to CBS for the afternoon taping of The Price is Right at CBS Studios. Arrangements were made by Michele Dixon, The Organizing Doctor, professional organizer.

Being proud San Diego Chargers football fans, and having just won the Division Championship… and playing the Steelers in the Playoffs, it was unanimously decided our TV Game show matching “Team Shirts” would be the CHARGERS shirts.

Audience members are "interviewed" before the show by staff, for about 15-30-seconds. Since we had a busload, chances were good that one person would be “selected” to be on the show as a Contestant.

It’s so LOUD in the 350-person studio you can’t hear anything…so the stage crew hold up a sign with the next Contestant’s name on it at the time it’s announced!

Ester Berry was called as the FIRST Contestant called. Wearing her blue Chargers shirt, she did great at the bidding stand and went up on stage, and even had a chance to spin the wheel with show emcee Drew Carey.

The show went along fine… changing of the prize sets, commercial breaks, etc., then the final Contestant was called… Sheryl Roush…  seated on the TOP row in the very back! Wearing her gold Chargers shirt, she was seated in the Steelers fan section… but assertively held her own! (after all.. she proudly trains the Charger Girl cheerleaders in their speaking and interviewing skills!)

The Charger Fans show airs on Thursday, February 26th, on CBS (Channel 8, 10:00-10:30am Pacific).

Ester Berry is a Senior Recruiter of The Wellspring Group, Inc. She specializes in advanced technology searches across multiple industries for both Fortune 500 and mid-sized business sectors with the goal of matching the right people with the right job opportunities.

Sheryl Roush is an international speaker and top-rated trainer, specializing in boosting attitudes, creating positive work environments and stellar service skills. www.SparklePresentations.com

Author Sheryl Roush Interviewed on
"Mornings" FamilyNet Radio Show

Sheryl Roush was interviewed on "Mornings with Lorri and Larry," live on FamilyNet.com Sirius Radio Channel 161 February 17, during the 6-9am/Eastern prime drive-time. A guest favorite for her energy and inspiration, this was Sheryl’s fourth appearance on the show.

Lorri Allen invited the 12-time author for a 12-minute guest spot interview regarding her recent publication release of Heart of a Woman in Business, and to solicit submissions for the forthcoming Heart of a Military Woman book, being co-authored with retired Master Sgt. USAF Eldonna Lewis-Fernandez.

"Mornings" co-host Larry Estepa, asked Sheryl why women can be “mean” in the workplace…you will have to hear his pointed questions to Sheryl, and how she tactfully responds with composure and insight! Roush is an 8-time business owner (since the age of 16), and former executive with major firms.

Heart of a Woman in Business is available at Amazon.com, or personally inscribed copies from author Sheryl Roush at the Sparkle Presentations, Inc.’s Sparkle Store.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

February 17

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day. And, you know what to do…perform a few random acts of kindness. Almost any kind deed will do. And, we highly recommend you perform kind acts on as many people as you can.

This is a favorite day of many people and groups. People like the idea of showing a little kindness to others. Its a fun and good thing to do. And, they like being on the receiving end of this day as well. It makes both the giver and the receiver feel good.

Schools have used this day as an educational event, and to promote the value of kindness. Organizations have used this day to promote their cause, and for fundraisers.

Caution: What comes around, goes around. Random Acts of Kindness is highly contagious.

Origin of Random Acts of Kindness Day:

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. We wish we could thank the originators of this great day. The originators have truly helped to make the world a better place.

Many organizations and groups have declared other days to be "Random Acts of Kindness Day." These declarations are usually local, one-time events, often for fundraisers.

MEN: What to get HER for Valentine’s Day!

Time to start PLANNING AHEAD this year!
As your wallet may be a little thinner than in the past, you want to think it through earlier this season, invest wisely in special gifts that won’t go to her HIPS, but to her HEART.

Whether getting something for your sweetheart, dear Mother, or hard-working colleague, boss, or valued client…. people are looking for something with SIGNIFICANCE today… things with meaning and greater VALUE than ever before.

As much as I will admit my love of chocolate…. the indulgence is short-lived… and straight past the lips and on to the hips… no thanks! Women want things that LAST. Give her something she will always cherish — and think of YOU when she sees it! And get this — it doesn’t have to cost much!

New Title in the Heart Book Series Announced!
JANUARY 6, 2009

Sparkle Press, a division of Sparkle Presentations, Inc., announced today the forthcoming title in the popular and quickly growing Heart Book Series, created only three years ago.

Heart of a Military Woman will be released before Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2009 and join the series of inspirational gift books by Sheryl Roush: Heart of a WomanHeart of a Mother,  Heart of the HolidaysHeart of a Woman in Business, and  Corazon de Mujer (Heart of a Woman in Spanish).

Eldonna Lewis-Fernandez is co-author of Heart of a Military Woman. Passionate about touching the lives of female veterans and being a retired veteran with 23 years of honorable service in the United States Air Force, Eldonna is teaching women how to take more RISK in their lives for maximum results. When she enlisted in October 1980, women made up only 8% of the military and today although more than doubled still only 20%. Professionally, Eldonna is a contract specialist in purchasing, negotiation and administration of government contracts. She is the President of Dynamic Vision International, based in Redondo Beach, California.

Personally, she’s a single mother of two, an award-winning speaker, on the board of the Women’s Peace Campaign and a certified master results coach. Even more personally, Eldonna shares her story in Heart of a Woman in Business, "I was a high school dropout who was told by my teachers and parents that I would never amount to anything. Born to two alcoholic parents, I grew up neglected and abused. The military was my saving grace and I fought hard again that ‘loser’ expectation, excelling in my military career. I became a leader, manager, and networking expert. I earned two associates and a bachelor’s degree while on active duty (and raising two children on her own) as well as the highest level of professional certification in my field."

Eldonna co-authors with Sheryl Roush, the author of the book series, a noted professional speaker, and is herself an ex-Navy wife, compassionate to those choosing a military lifestyle and grateful to their incredible dedication.

Passing of Star Trek’s “First Lady” Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

Passing of Star Trek’s "First Lady"
Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

Actress Majel Barrett Roddenberry, beloved star of sci-fi phenomenon Star Trek passed away after a short battle with Leukemia, on Thursday, December 18, 2008, surrounded by family and friends in her Bel-Air home.

Majel had a recurring role in the original "Star Trek" as Nurse Chapel.

Barrett first appeared in Star Trek (The Original Series) first pilot which aired in 1964. Her role as the Enterprise’s first officer (referred to simply as "Number One") did not fair well with NBC execs, who could not see a woman in leadership, and was later changed to Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. When the series was retooled, Barrett eventually returned in a new role as the blonde Nurse Chapel.

Barrett’s adored flamboyant role as Betazoid royalty and "Lwaxana Troi" and telepathic mother of Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation demonstrated her compassion, creativity, and comfort with bearing-it-all.  She is also the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in Star Trek: TNG, ST: Deep Space Nine, and ST: Voyager.

It was the love affair between her and her "Imzadi," the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry that earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." Over the course of their more then quarter-century love affair, she became not only Gene’s soulmate, his partner, and his creative muse. Majel helped Gene expand the Star Trek film, even after his passing. Majel brought two more of Gene’s visions to life: Earth: Final Conflict, and Andromeda (hand-picking stars Kevin Sorbo and Lexa Doig).

Before "Trek," Barrett had roles on several television shows, including "The Lucy Show," "Bonanza," "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Untouchables." She also appeared in 1958’s "The Black Orchid," 1963’s "The Quick and the Dead," and 1966’s "A Guide for the Married Man."

She is survived by her only son Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry Jr…. and millions of adoring Fans throughout the Galaxy.

Christmas Poem:
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
by Sheryl Roush

It came upon a midnight clear
That glorious song of old
God’s child was born to earth so began
The greatest story ever told.

Wise men came to see him there
Laying in soft manger’s hay
Radiant angelic hosts proclaimed
“Unto you a child is born” they say.

Centuries from that first nativity scene
From Christ’s birth, we’ve come to hear
Of God’s plan, Virgin Mary’s gift
Come closer to love, and farther from fear.

Still today, we celebrate that glorious night
Midnight clear, and stars so bright
That all will know of Divine love
And great gifts from Heaven above.

Holiday Poem:
In Three Words
by Sheryl Roush

Memories, Flashbacks, Celebrations
Kisses under mistletoe
Cheery red check
Children wide-eyes
Excited laughing children
Frantic rushing parents
Presents under trees
Receiving favorite things
Proposals and rings
Families traveling far
Driving loaded cars
Sweet hot chocolate
Candy cane treats
Apple Rum Cider
Nutmeg and Eggnog
Making plans early
Late night parties
Singing holiday tunes
Cherished friends re-un
Love abundantly shared
Long airplane flights
Snowed-in delays
Families lovingly reunited
Tears of joy
Cats batting ornaments
Dogs chasing cats
Lights flickering on
Angels atop trees
Sweet treats galore
Frosting sugar cookies
Dipping cheese balls
Avoiding fruit cakes
Exchanging holiday recipes
Joyous carols sung
Hope-filled stockings hung
Crisp snowflakes fall
Card sentiments mailed
Monthly earnings spent
Playing in snow
Sparkling garland shines
Shopping last minute
World peace rings
Packing it up
Storing it away
Waiting another year
Anticipating next year
Doing it again

Yuletide Poem: A Time, by Sheryl Roush
Published in Heart of the Holidays, by Sheryl Roush

Yuletide

A time of Celebration
,
Bringing closure to the old year,
Setting resolutions for a better life,
Making goals for the next year.

A time of Gratitude,
Expressing to those near and dear to us,
A special fondness in our hearts.

A time of Hope,
Hope for a better future.
Hope for deeper meaning on our lives.
Hope for strengthened family ties.

A time of Forgiveness,
Letting by-gones by truly by-gone.
Starting anew with fresh, clean slates.

A time of Peace,
A deeep longing for harmony.
Reunion, collaboration, trust.

A time of Spirit,
Celebrating our soul’s profound wisdom of the ages.
Rekindling our uniqueness and collectiveness
as we are ONE on the planet.

We are the Family of God.

A time of Reconnection,
Being back in touch with those we’ve not seen/heard
from in ages,
and picking back up the conversation
right where we left off.

A time of Hearts,
Bonding for the first time.
Reuniting from separation.
Deepening in trust.
Pure, innocent, Divinely connected.
Connections so deep, it’s beyond words.

A time of Humor,
Laughing over advertises won.
Telling our tales of tribulations.
Seeing the irony of it all.
Sharing stories of our life’s adventures.
Recognizing our common journeys.

A time of Love,
Express candidly.
Sharing more openly to others of our true feelings.
Knowing that we are truly loved.
Not for what we have, or for presents given, or promises made.
Just because.
Unconditional, non-judgmental.
The love that connects us all – one heart to the other.
Our Divine umbilical cord soul to soul.
Heart to Heart.

The Christmas Movie Card

Terri Marie Whitewing created this special three-minute "Christmas Movie Card" complete with her own music playing in the background to touching photos and statements.

The message within the movie is meant to warm the heart.

The Story Behind the Card
Because of all the moving I’ve done the past several years (5 moves in 5 years)  I just didn’t feel like decorating much for the holidays if it meant looking at one more box. One day the message on the song for the movie came through loud and clear. "Christmas is something you carry in your heart. It’s always here when you feel it."

As a reminder when we get stressed out over the holiday Preparations, Decorations, and other such ‘rations, just remember… the Christmas Spirit comes in quietly – softly entering any moment of pure love.

Here is a gift of love to you for every holy day that you live.
Let’s spread the Christmas Spirit around the world.

It’s always Christmas inside a warm heart.

Christmas Poem/Prayer:
NATIVI-TEA

At the moment of my birth there was a celebration, too.
The angels sang and God was all I knew.
God was all I remembered – for on earth
as in Heaven we are all one.
To remind us of this God sent us his Son.
Once a year we are reminded of His special birth.
It is a rejoicing that encircles all of the earth.
Gifts are given, hearts open wide, the focus is on good
and we all take pride.
The hope for my daily rebirth is now understood.
A child in a manger, simple and pure –
a symbol of peace and innocence –

that we are all safe from danger, sound and secure.
To be in God’s presence is the present I truly need.
In this time of celebration I am freed from my own greed.
I live to give – my gifts I share.
I do not hide them or disguise them,

nor place them under a tree.
My gifts of love and laughter, kindness and caring
were meant for sharing –

not just once a year or for a select few.
The gifts I have are unique to me
and I celebrate my own nativity.

Every birth is planned, every child has a right,
every life is precious, delicate and meant to be.
On the tree of life every child’s light shines bright for all to see.
Thank you, God; my own light clears my visibility.
There is a place for each and every one of us
on God’s special tree.

We glisten and twinkle in colourful harmony.
We each have our place and together
we light up the world as we claim our space –

next to each other, side by side,
loving and grateful God takes pride

at the birth of each and every one of His children –
that’s you and me.

Christmas is a celebration of all we are and all we can be.
Thank you God, for this divine festivity.
Amen.

Many of the above celebrities also attended the special dinner that evening, joined by Rod Roddenberry, son of late Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek. Pictured here: "Rod and Berry" comic strip artist David Reddick (also of Garfield fame), Sheryl Roush (me) and Rod Roddenberry.
